Drug overdoses are now the #1 cause of unintentional deaths. The main reason of these deaths are prescription opioids, heroin, and fentanyl.
Even when taking prescribed opioids as directed, you could build up a tolerance. Some people find it easy to stop taking opioids while others find it harder to quit. Those who find it harder to quit may develop an opioid use disorder. Over 50% percent of people who have misused prescription opioids reported getting them from friends or relatives. People that develop an opioid use disorder are more likely to die of drug overdose.
