November is  Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Lung cancer is one of the most common types of cancer, and is the leading cause of cancer deaths.
When symptoms  do appear, they can easily be mistaken for common respiratory illnesses. Because of this, many cases are diagnosed at later stage. Symptoms of early-stage lung cancer may include a cough, shortness of breath and fatigue. As the disease progresses, symptoms may include: chronic cough, spitting up blood, pain in the chest or back, hoarseness and/or wheezing.
The main risk factors for lung cancer are, A history of or current tobacco use; exposure to second-hand smoke; exposure to asbestos, arsenic, or other chemicals; radiation exposure, including radiation therapy to the breast or chest; living in an area with air pollution; and/or a family history of lung cancer.
If you are a current smoker, the most important thing you can do is to quit.

Most people high blood pressure know their numbers, but may not follow their treatment plan because they feel fine and don’t notice any symptoms.  The results from uncontrolled high blood pressure are far from invisible or silent. Heart attack, stroke and other serious health problems can be caused by unmanaged high blood pressure.  Talk with your doctor to create an exercise, diet and medication plan that works for you. If you’ve fallen off your plan, get back on it.

What Is Antibody Therapy?
Antibody therapy is a series of 4 injections which are given to reduce your risk of developing severe COVID illness. You will receive all injections at the same time.
In order to receive antibody therapy you must have a positive COVID test and at least one diagnosis placing you at high-risk for severe COVID illness. Some of these diagnoses include, obesity; chronic kidney disease; diabetes; high blood pressure; pregnancy; and chronic lung disease.

If you need a test, please call our office first (337.527.6385) so we can schedule your appointment.

Diabetes left untreated can cause multiple eye complications and eventually lead to blindness.
Those with diabetes are more likely to suffer from glaucoma than those without diabetes. It becomes more common the longer you have diabetes.  Glaucoma is when pressure builds up in the eye then the pressure pinches the blood vessels that carry blood to the retina. Vision is then gradually lost.

Those with diabetes are also more likely to develop cataracts as well as developing them at a younger age. With cataracts, the eye's clear lens clouds, blocking your sight.
Another diabetic eye complication is retinopathy. Retinopathy can progress after several years leading to complete vision loss.  The blood vessels are so damaged they close off causing new blood vessels to start growing in the retina. These new vessels are weak and can leak blood, blocking vision. The sooner retinopathy is diagnosed, the more successful treatments will be.
You should make sure to control your diabetes by living a healthy lifestyle and taking your medications as directed by your physician.
Make sure to see your physician regularly if you have diabetes! Have you had a yearly diabetic eye exam?
Schlamp Family Medical Clinic offers diabetic eye exams!!!!!
